The Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (IHMT NOVA) is situated in the historic Belém district of Lisbon, just by the Tagus River, a quarter rich in heritage, palaces and monuments, yet serene and full of charm. Here, students and researchers enjoy an inspiring environment in the heart of the city. IHMT NOVA is a premier centre for education, research, and innovation in vector-borne diseases. With more than a century of history, it is internationally recognised for excellence in public health and biomedical sciences, with particular expertise in medical entomology and the epidemiology of tropical diseases.

IHMT NOVA provides an exceptional environment for students interested in the biology, ecology, and control of insects that transmit human and animal pathogens. Its teaching programmes combine cutting-edge training with hands-on experience in fieldwork, molecular tools, vector surveillance, and insect–pathogen interactions. Students work alongside internationally recognised researchers within the “Excellent”-rated Global Health and Tropical Disease research unit and benefit from advanced infrastructures, including BSL-3 laboratories, the Arthropod Safety Level 3 facility (VIASEF), a certified Animal House, the BIOTROP biobank, and an Insect Collection harbouring over one hundred thousand medically relevant specimens, an invaluable asset for teaching.

As a WHO Collaborating Centre and a key institution within Lusophone global health networks, IHMT NOVA offers unique opportunities for international projects, mobility, and applied research. Joining IHMT NOVA allows students to develop expertise in medical entomology while contributing to innovative solutions for vector-borne disease control worldwide.
